Social networking and online community sites are emerging at a particularly quick rate. They serve as an internet service platform for building up social relations among the people. The members of a social network are connected by one or more explicit classifications like friendship, general interests, dislikes, sexual relationship and the like.
There are a few social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, LinkedIn, and so on. Which supplies a service platform for the people to interact from any bit of the planet.
The services offered by the social networking sites are
– Instant Messaging
– Blogs
– Chat
– Forums
– Directories
The social network is mainly oriented around a member and their social network while an online community is usually a group of people that share a typical interest.
Examples of web communities include: Myspace which is a specialist music driven website or the iLuna Tantra Community for private and religious expansion. There are also a complete range of Ning Based Niche Communities hosted on a common platform.
Web communities and social networking sites connect folks from every area of the world in a way that is truly unique. Furthermore they come to make some new friends who share similar interests and activities. One thing that is common in these sites is that users can post their perspectives or comments within forums and have interaction with other users. Generally such websites can end up in new friendships and relations developing in a way that duplicates real world relations that people can have. Friendships emerge and even new romantic relationships have even been known to develop as a consequence of such interactions.
In an environment in which folks are usually scared to relate to folk head to head, (particuarly in gigantic towns) people can find it way easier to meet folks in the virtual world where there identities are concealed. It has even been famous for folks to develop completely new alter egos in such environments where they use new names and identities to participate in these websites. Hiding behind fake names enables folks to be ungoverned in a way they could be afraid of in day to day life.
Giving folk the resources and courage to be themselves, cannot be a bad thing and can only lead to the basic human need that we all have, which is connection.

Back to school; those three words can cause an array of emotions for teens as the summer winds down and fall approaches. For some it’s excitement; for some it’s fear; for some it’s a challenge. What can make teens start off the school year right? Having the right tools! To finish any job you must have the right tools. Putting together a fun and useful toolkit will add excitement to the school year.
Every good back to school toolkit must have the “tool belt.” Think outside of the proverbial tool box when it comes to a backpack. Rather than the standard over the shoulder backpack look for a messenger bag or a one shoulder backpack with a vintage look. This allows style, which the teens will love, and function which the parents will love. With the rapidly growing world of social networking and technology, people are getting invitations to Google+ at www.googleinvites.net to register for an account.
Once you have the “tool belt” it’s time to fill it! Of course the standard supplies are a given. Pencils, pens, notebooks, etc. are a must. Personalizing to fit a teen’s personality provides inspiration to put those tools to good use! If the budget is tight buy one special notebook and set of pens or pen, again for inspiration or a plain binder that they can decorate and make their own. Allow them to personalize as much as possible. Personalizing contributes to ownership of something and when they have ownership of their tools they are more apt to use them.
Going green this school year? Save money and the planet by arming your teen with a lunch satchel and refillable water bottle. Out with the vending machines; in with a healthier teen and cleaner planet! Find a water bottle with a small filter built in to the top so there is never a place it can’t be refilled. No more brown bags with insulated lunch satchels that come equipped with food storage containers are readily available in various sizes and styles. Retro lunch pails from Batman and Superman to Hello Kitty and My Little Pony are also making a comeback and make for a cheaper alternative to the insulated satchels.
Another key element to a teen’s back to school toolkit is of course the wardrobe. This is the “hammer” in the tool belt that is used every day that teens are the most concerned about. With many schools requiring uniforms this can make for a boring element unless you spice it up! For the girls, get the basics for the required uniform but then look for accessories that they can mix and match to add some flare to their style. Headbands, fun earrings, necklaces, etc are all easy additions to any outfit. For the guys there are watches and bracelets.
The last and most important tool in a teen’s back to school toolkit is confidence and encouragement from the parents. Encouraging words and notes can do so much to add to the confidence level of a teen enabling them to succeed and as a result they will believe in themselves. Have a set of cards that you can place in their lunch or backpack that will have an encouraging note. Make a special dinner or bake a special cake for no other reason except to say that you are proud of them and believe in them. These actions will help produce the grades and add to the confidence that every parent wants to see in their teen.

There’s a new social network on the scene to compete with the newly announced Google+ and the old giant, Facebook. It’s called ModMetro; and instead of trying to copy the old idea of a social network, it’s expanding it with several new, exciting features. These new features include a classifieds section and a local directory. These new things are added to the typical findings, such as events, groups, and profile pages. It’s also being implemented as a local social network. As it goes into beta phase, it’s being kept to Bergen County, NJ.
ModMetro’s local directory is one of its great features that will distinguish it from the competition. The directory has thousands of listings from local businesses, and are divided into various categories, such as ‘Hotels & Accommodations,’ ‘Construction & Contractors,’ ‘Banks & Finance,’ and ‘Legal Services.’ Of course there are many more. These business listings can include a variety of information, such as street address, URL, telephone, and perhaps a written explanation about the business. The street address is accompanied by a map to help the user see exactly where the business is located. Listings can also include photographs, videos, and even events. All of these pieces of information are helpful, but the best piece is the review section.
The simple “Like” (made famous by Facebook) isn’t adequate when it comes to reviewing a business. ModMetro has realized this, and has thus developed its review system. ModMetro’s reviews utilize the standard one to five star rating, a short description of service, and a pros and cons section. There are other review websites that ModMetro will compete with. But unlike those websites, ModMetro lets you see who posted reviews. This way you can look for reviews your friends have posted-opinions you can be surer you’ll agree with.
The next big feature of ModMetro is the Classifieds section. Classifieds allow individuals and businesses to post a variety of listings. One of the most revolutionary is the jobs listings. Other categories include a ‘For Sale’ section, a ‘Real Estate’ section, and a ‘pets’ section. Users can browse through each of these categories (and view only the listings that are close to their location), sorting them by a variety of conditions. Alternatively, users may search through the listings (if they know what they’re looking for). From the Classifieds section, users can also post a listing themselves. The user can make any kind of listing they’d like.
Adding the social aspect to this kind of online classified ad is a tremendous improvement. Unlike the popular site Craigslist, ModMetro users don’t have to interact with a faceless being on the other end of a computer screen. Instead, they can see a name and a picture, and can even message the other user right through ModMetro (if they are uncomfortable giving out their email address). Certainly this is a great benefit to users, who don’t have to worry about the consequences that might arise from dealing with an anonymous figure through the internet.
In addition to all these new features that separate ModMetro from the competition, the new social network also has everything users will expect. Users can upload profile pictures, add friends and write on each other’s wall. Users get a nice home page, with an activity feed called ‘On The Wire’. This social network is starting out on a very local basis. That means its directory and classifieds sections will be relevant to all its users. ModMetro is certainly going to be one of the big players in the social network game, and it’s a welcome change.
