No other natural resource offers the potential of hemp. Cannabis Hemp is capable of producing significant quantities of paper, textiles, building materials, food, medicine, paint, detergent, varnish, oil, ink, and fuel. Unlike other crops, hemp can grow in most climates and on most farmland throughout the world with moderate water and fertilizer requirements, no pesticides, and no herbicides. Cannabis Hemp (also known as Indian Hemp) has enormous potential to become a major natural resource that can benefit both the economy and the environment.

THE REAL REASON MARIJUANA IS ILLEGAL IS BECAUSE IT’S HEMP!

President Obama probably didn’t anticipate that his brief dismissal of marijuana legalization during the online town hall would light up a potent movement of support for decriminalization.

The fact that he even addressed such a controversial and oft-ignored topic impressed some. But the way he seemed to deride the question angered man who quickly expressed their dissent online in website comments, on blogs and throughout Social Networks.

“There was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation,” the president said during the town hall, amongst a thunder of laughter from the crowd. “And I don’t know what this says about the online audience.” More laughter.

“The answer is, no, I don’t think that is a good strategy to grow our economy,” Obama said.

No further explanation given. Next question.

His short response was not only disconcerting for marijuana supporters but also a bit perplexing. After all, Obama called for marijuana decriminalization during …

… a debate at Northwestern University when he was running for U.S. Senate in 2004.

The legalization debate is not a new topic for websites like YouTube, Digg and Facebook, where a pot-smoking niche has long congregated. But it has exploded in the days since the town hall.

The Huffington Post prominently featured an editorial titled “Pot Saved My Life, Mr. President.” In it, the writer concluded, “The president will be asked this question again, and maybe next time he won’t laugh at us.”

The Times had a story Sunday quoting former federal judge Jim Gray claiming the war on drugs had failed and that pot should be legal. The so-called failed drug war was, incidentally, the same claim made by Obama in 2004.

The lit-up lobby rages strongly on social networking channels as well. The Facebook page, called M A R I J U A N A, has seen a spike in membership as of late.

And on the Social News website Digg, a story about marijuana benefits, decriminalization or reactions to Obama’s weedy treatment of the pot question has been voted to the home page every day since the town hall — and in many cases, multiple times a day.

So what doesthat say about the online audience? Considering that many political analysts attribute a major part of Obama’s election to his popularity on social networks, maybe he shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss something they clearly feel strongly about.

A new trailer for Harriet the Spy – get the info right now!

Thanks for coming back to Clevver TV, I’m Dana Ward talking all about the official trailer for Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars.

Of course, this Disney Channel Movie stars one of the channel’s favorites, Jennifer Stone. In the trailer, we get to see her sneak around to observe people and places – using some spy equipment – and then she writes her discoveries in her journal, of course. 

But in a modern twist on this film follow-up, Harriet’s school is looking for a new blogger for the term… She’s up against a popular girl at school and they’re Blogging to the bloggy end.  Harriet has an idea to uncover the dirty secrets of the biggest teen star, but she spy-out any secrets and will she ultimately win the competition?  We’ll just have to see when Harriet the Spy debuts on the Disney Channel this March 27th.  Will you be there?

I didn’t get what I was looking for from this interview, but I think what I learned is even better.

I called up Kevin Fischer and Ed Weissman because they’re two of the top users of a site that was sending Mixergy a lot of traffic, and I wanted to learn how to get more. The site is Y Combinator’s Social News site, Hacker News.

As I talked to them, I felt that they loved Hacker News so much that asking them how I can get traffic from the site would feel dirty. So I switch direction. I asked them questions to learn how you & I can build such passionate communities in our businesses. Here’s what I learned.

Being different

I’m not including pictures of Ed & Kevin in this post. Everyone I’ve ever interviewed wanted their picture on Mixergy. They didn’t. If you go to Hacker News, you’ll notice that members can’t add their pictures to the profiles. Virtually every other site encourages its users to post pictures. This site doesn’t.

Paul Graham, Y Combinators’ founder, explains why there are no pictures: “I think it’s better if people make their own portraits with their ideas.”

But I think there’s a bigger message here about how communities are built. Communities seem to need to be different from the rest of the world as a way of attracting their audience. Seth Godin talks more about that in this Tribes presentation.

Working alone/together

As more people work independently, talking with peers online seems to be a bigger need. Ed told me something that I’m increasingly hearing from others, “I literally sit from 12-16 hours a day 5-7 a week programming in a cubicle alone…. These people are my peers, so it’s almost like a virtual water cooler.”

Meeting in person

Even though most of their conversations happen online, Ed, Kevin and other Hacker News members have met in person at a Y Combinator event. It seems that in-person meetings help built tighter connections for online communities.

Sanjay Sabnani, who runs some of the biggest online forums, told me that he often brings his online members together for in person events at his house.

Getting Bribes Rewards

Online community organizers talk about their communities as if they were hippie communes where members participate because they only care about a greater good. But in the interviews that I’ve done, I’ve noticed that there’s a good deal of quid pro quo.

At Hacker News, the top members are invited to Y Combinator’s Startup School. AJ Vaynerchuk said he gives people who join the PleaseDress.Me community free tshirts. Ethan Bauley of M90 said that his agency encourages clients to give active members products. And at the Mixergy Viral Forum, Jason Nazar of docstoc did an experiment to show us how giving away a document can grow a Twitter community.

I’m not criticizing any of these tactics. I think we need to understand how communities are really built so we can grow ours intelligently.
